And, with the usual cinematic disclaimer, no birds are harmed in the process: these pigeons are entirely digital.

Enter the rise of “slowcial” platforms—a mashup of slow and social—designed to make messaging intentionally sluggish. On Carrier Pidge, built by American developer Noah Iarrobino, dispatching a note from Delhi to Bengaluru takes roughly 10 to 12 hours. Launched in April, the app lingered in relative obscurity before an August social media post went viral, sending its download numbers surging.

Send a dispatch via snail and it crawls forward at barely 1.5 kilometers per hour; an owl covers roughly thirty kilometers in the same span. Both apps feature live maps to trace a delivery’s progress, capping speeds around 177 km/h. On Carrier Pidge, there is even a 0.2 percent chance your bird gets lost or dies en route—requiring a 99-cent fee to dispatch a replacement. Roost, meanwhile, incorporates a global “Pen Pal” feature that pairs users with complete strangers.

Why embrace synthetic inefficiency? Speaking to The New York Times, Iarrobino framed the app as part of the broader “slow-tech” counterculture—a refuge for people exhausted by relentless digital tethering. Mendelsohn echoed this to TechCrunch, noting that hyper-connectivity turns daily life into an unending barrage of pinging alerts. Slowing down communication, they argue, restores gravity, intimacy, and intentionality to everyday exchanges.

‘कैरियर पिज’ (Carrier Pidge) ऐसा ही एक स्लोशल (Social का नवजात भाई Slowcial) ऐप है. स्लोशल इसलिए क्योंकि ये यूज़र्स को कबूतर की धीमी रफ़्तार से मैसेज भेजने की सुविधा देता है. यानी अगर आप कैरियर पिज पर किसी को दिल्ली से बैंगलोर मैसेज भेजें, तो वो उसे कम से कम 10-12 घंटे बाद ही मिलेगा. अप्रैल में लॉन्च हुए इस ऐप को एक अमेरिकन जेन-ज़ी नोआ इआरोबीनो ने बनाया है. इस स्लोशल ऐपसे जुड़ने वालों की संख्या शुरुआती कई महीनों तक महज़ कुछ सौ ही थी. लेकिन अगस्त में ऐप से जुड़ी इआरोबीनो की एक सोशल मीडिया पोस्ट वायरल होने और मीडिया की नज़रो में आने के बाद कैरियर पिज लगातार लोकप्रिय होता जा रहा है.

कुछ इसी तरह का किस्सा कैरियर पिज जैसे ही एक और ऐप ‘रूस्ट’ (Roost) का भी है. दोनों के बीच सबसे बड़े अंतर की बात करें तो रूस्ट पर कबूतर के साथ पेंग्विन, बाज़, हमिंगबर्ड और स्नेल जैसे 1000 से अधिक जीवों के ज़रिए मैसेज भेजने का विकल्प मौजूद है. हर जीव द्वारा चिट्ठी पहुंचाए जाने की रफ़्तार उसके स्वभाव के मुताबिक़ होती है. जैसे कि एक स्नेल के ज़रिए चिट्ठी भेजने पर वो एक घंटे में लगभग डेढ़ किलोमीटर ही आगे बढ़ पाएगा, वहीं उल्लू से भेजने पर इतने ही समय में लगभग तीस किलोमीटर का सफ़र तय करेगा. ये ऐप भी कैरियर पिज की तरह अप्रैल में ही लॉन्च हुआ था. इसके अब लाखों यूज़र्स हैं और इनकी संख्या भी एक यूज़र की सोशल मीडिया पोस्ट वायरल होने के बाद अचानक बढ़ी थी…

Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s Vande Mataram was the emotional soul of India’s independence movement. It served as a powerful rallying cry against colonial rule and remains deeply etched in national memory. Yet, in January 1950, when the Constituent Assembly formally adopted the national anthem, it chose Rabindranath Tagore’s Jana Gana Mana, while granting Vande Mataram equal status as the national song.

But a national anthem has a different job from a song of resistance. It must turn emotion into a common voice of a nation, one that can be sung by crowds, played at ceremonies, and carried beyond the country’s borders.

Many national anthems are notoriously difficult for ordinary crowds to sing. The US anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner, demands a wide vocal range, with sudden leaps between high and low notes. 13 अप्रैल 1919. बैसाखी के मौके पर पूरा पंजाब झूम रहा था. गुरमेल सिंह अपनी पत्नी और बच्चे के साथ गांव से अमृतसर आया था. स्वर्ण मंदिर में मत्था टेकने के बाद उसका पांच साल का बेटा बोला, ‘बापू, मेनू जलियांवाला बाग ले ‘चलो. ओ मेनू वेखना सी.’

गुरमेल उसकी बातों में आ गया… ‘चल पुत्तर, हुन चल’… उसकी पत्नी सुखप्रीत कौर मंदिर में महिलाओं के बीच बैठी बातें कर रही थी. ‘ओ सुखप्रीते, छेती कर. नोने (छोटे बच्चे) नू जलियांवाला बाग ले चलना है.’ नोना गुरमेल सिंह और मां की उंगली थामे ख़ुशी-ख़ुशी चल दिया.

मंदिर से बाग बमुश्किल आधा मील रहा होगा. बाग के चारों तरफ मकान, ऊंची दीवारें और अंदर जाने का सिर्फ एक ही रास्ता. बाग के अंदर लोग जमा हो रहे थे. सुखप्रीत ने भीड़ में किसी से पूछ लिया तो उसने बताया कि एक सभा होनी है. छह फुट ऊंचे और बरगद जैसे चौड़े अपने पिता के कंधे पर बैठे नोने को बाग में बहुत मज़ा आ रहा था.

सभा का नाम सुनते ही गुरमेल के कान खड़े हो गए. उसने पढ़ा था कि पांच महीने पहले ख़त्म हुए विश्वयुद्ध के बाद अंग्रेजों ने हिंदुस्तान पर बहुत सारे टैक्स बढ़ा दिए थे. इससे महंगाई बढ़ गई थी. मोहनदास करमचंद गांधी देश में सत्याग्रह की बात कर रहे थे. सन 1916 में लखनऊ में इंडियन नेशनल कांग्रेस और मुस्लिम लीग ने समझौता कर लिया था. और कांग्रेस के गरम दल व नरम दल में भी मेल हो गया था. सबने मिलकर अंग्रेजों को देश से बाहर निकालने की कसम खा ली थी…

आज दुनिया भर की राजनीति पर नज़र डालें तो उसमें एक बड़ा असंतुलन साफ़ दिखाई देता है. पूरी दुनिया के नेताओं की औसत उम्र 63 वर्ष है, जबकि वैश्विक आबादी की औसत उम्र महज़ 30 साल ही है. इस मामले में कुछ अपवाद भी हैं, जैसे कि नेपाल के 36 वर्षीय प्रधानमंत्री बालेन शाह या आइसलैंड, बुर्किना फ़ासो और इक्वाडोर के राष्ट्राध्यक्ष जो महज़ 38 साल के ही हैं. लेकिन व्यापक स्तर पर राजनीति का झुकाव ‘वृद्धतंत्र’ (Gerontocracy) की ओर ही है.

Take a look around global politics today and an obvious disconnect jumps out: the median age of world leaders is 63, while that of the global population is around 30. There are exceptions, of course — like Nepal’s 36-year-old Prime Minister Balen Shah, the 38-year-old leaders of Iceland, Burkina Faso and Ecuador, and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who became Ukraine’s president at the age of 41. But the broader trend is clear: political power remains heavily concentrated among older people.

At the extreme end sit rulers governing populations a fraction of their age, like Cameroon’s Paul Biya at 93 or Saudi Arabia’s King Salman at 90. Yet this isn’t just an authoritarian habit. Major democracies show the exact same pattern. Donald Trump governs in his 80s, and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi serves in his late 70s.

In most fields, people in their 80s and 90s are rare exceptions at the top. Politics is different. National leadership has no mandatory retirement age, and some of the world’s most powerful political offices are still occupied by people well into their 80s and 90s.

It isn’t because voters dislike young candidates. As Aksel Sundström, political scientist at the University of Gothenburg and co-author of Youth Without Representation, pointed out in a recent TV discussion: “It’s very expensive to run as a candidate for politics. क़रीब छह साल पहले भी सत्याग्रह ने भाजपा की आईटी सेल पर एक रिपोर्ट प्रकाशित की थी. उस समय कोविड की पहली लहर खत्म ही हुई थी और विभिन्न परीक्षाओं व रोज़गार से जुड़े मुद्दों को लेकर छात्र और युवा काफी आक्रोशित थे. वे गुस्से में यूट्यूब पर प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी के वीडियो दनादन डिसलाइक कर रहे थे और उनके जन्मदिन पर सोशल मीडिया में ‘राष्ट्रीय बेरोज़गार दिवस’ ट्रेंड करा रहे थे. उस वक्त जब आईटी सेल ने इसे तुर्की के बॉट्स की कारस्तानी बताया तो युवाओं ने मोदीजी के वीडियोज़ पर कमेंट्स के साथ-साथ अपने गांवों-कस्बों के नाम भी लिख डाले. वे मज़ाक में इन स्थानों को तुर्की, कनाडा और अमेरिका में स्थित बता रहे थे.

जून-जुलाई में जंतर-मंतर पर हुए छात्रों के आंदोलन की शुरुआत भी इंटरनेट और सोशल मीडिया पर ही हुई थी. भारत के मुख्य न्यायाधीश की एक टिप्पणी ने एक अजीबोगरीब ऑनलाइन संगठन — कॉकरोच जनता पार्टी — को जन्म दिया, और उसने इस आंदोलन को. इस संगठन से जुड़े लोगों में दो बातें कॉमन हैं: इनमें से ज्यादातर युवा हैं और ‘मीम-लवर्स’ भी. इसलिए जब इन लोगों ने मोदी सरकार के खिलाफ अपना आंदोलन शुरू किया तो उन्हें भी भाजपा की आईटी सेल का सामना करना ही था. अगर साल 2020 में जो हुआ उसे मुठभेड़ कहें तो इस बार जो देखने को मिला वह किसी युद्ध से कम नहीं था.

आईटी सेल पर लंबे समय से नज़र रखने वालों का मानना है कि उसके तरकश में कुछ स्थायी तीर हैं. इनमें प्रदर्शन करने वालों को ‘एंटी-नेशनल’, ‘एंटी-हिंदू’, ‘टुकड़े-टुकड़े गैंग’, ‘अर्बन नक्सल’, ‘खालिस्तानी’ या ‘कांग्रेसी-वामपंथी’ बताना ख़ास तौर पर शामिल है. इन तमगों के समर्थन में अक्सर यह भी दावा किया जाता है कि आंदोलन की फंडिंग पाकिस्तान, चीन, बांग्लादेश जैसे देशों या जॉर्ज सोरोस और बिल गेट्स जैसी विदेशी हस्तियों से आ रही है. इसके अलावा आंदोलन और उससे जुड़े लोगों के खिलाफ पुराने वीडियोज़, एडिटेड क्लिप्स या एआई से बनी तस्वीरें और वीडियो भी इस्तेमाल किए जाते हैं. कई बार मूल मुद्दे से ध्यान भटकाने के लिए प्रदर्शन से लोगों को हो रही दिक्कतों, पुलिसकर्मियों के घायल होने आदि को चर्चा का केंद्र बनाने की कोशिश भी की जाती है. और हर बार चल सकने वाला एक तीर ‘कांग्रेस भी तो ऐसा करती थी’ भी है ही.

इस बार भी आईटी सेल ने अपने इन तीरों का इस्तेमाल करने की भरसक कोशिश की, लेकिन वे कारगर साबित नहीं हुए. दरअसल इस बार उसका पाला एक ऐसी ‘वानर सेना’ से पड़ा था जिसके बारे में कुछ भी प्रेडिक्ट कर पाना आसान नहीं था. ये लोग ‘एंटी-नेशनल’ कहे जाने पर तिरंगा, फूल और किताबें लेकर राष्ट्रगान गा सकते थे और ‘फॉरेन फंडिंग’ के इल्ज़ाम का मुकाबला शी जिनपिंग को फोन मिलाने जैसी रील्स बनाकर कर रहे थे. देश के कोने-कोने से आए ये युवा फ़ुटपाथ पर चटाई बिछाकर सो सकते थे, रात भर जागकर प्रदर्शन-स्थल की पहरेदारी कर सकते थे, दिन में जंतर-मंतर की सफाई कर सकते थे, और अपने इन सभी कामों के अजब-गज़ब वीडियो बनाकर उन्हें हर रोज़ वायरल भी करा सकते थे.

जब कोई फिल्म इतिहास की किसी जटिल और मुश्किल घटना पर रोशनी डालती है, तो सरकारें अक्सर दो मेंसे एक काम करती हैं: वे या तो फिल्म पर इसलिए प्रतिबंध लगाने की कोशिश करती हैं कि वह उनकी या देशकी शांति भंग कर सकती है, या खुद को शांत रखकर वे अपने नागरिकों की समझ पर भरोसा करती हैं और उन्हेंवह फिल्म और सच्चाई का उसका संस्करण देखने देती हैं.

मोदी सरकार ने सतलुज को ओटीटी प्लेटफॉर्म से हटवाकर, ज़ाहिर है पहला वाला रास्ता चुना. लेकिन अगरअन्य देशों के उदाहरण देखें तो परिपक्व लोकतंत्र अक्सर दूसरे रास्ते पर चलते दिखते हैं. इन उदाहरणों से पताचलता है कि रोक लगाने के बजाय कड़वी सच्चाई का सामना करके लोगों का भरोसा बनाए रखना ज्यादाआसान है.

हनी त्रेहन के निर्देशन में बनी फिल्म सतलुज, मानवाधिकार कार्यकर्ता जसवंत सिंह खालड़ा के जीवन परआधारित है. खालड़ा ने उग्रवाद के दौर की पंजाब पुलिस की कथित आपराधिक ज्यादतियों और हज़ारों लोगोंके गायब हो जाने को उजागर किया था. बाद में उनका भी अपहरण और हत्या हो गई थी. ये तथ्य अदालती रिकॉर्ड्स और विभिन्न जांचों का हिस्सा हैं.

सतलुज को तीन साल तक केंद्रीय फिल्म प्रमाणन बोर्ड (सीबीएफसी) का सर्टिफिकेट नहीं मिला. इसके लिएनिर्माताओं से फिल्म में 100 से ज्यादा कट्स लगाने के लिए कहा गया. जब उन्होंने ऐसा न करके सतलुज कोओटीटी प्लेटफॉर्म पर रिलीज कर दिया, तो भारत सरकार ने फिल्म को वहां से भी हटवा दिया.

1. दक्षिण कोरिया: ए टैक्सी ड्राइवर (2017)

यह फिल्म मई 1980 के उस ‘ग्वांगजू विद्रोह’ पर बनी थी जो सैन्य तानाशाही के खिलाफ दक्षिण कोरिया केग्वांग्जू शहर में हुआ था. इस दौरान कोरियाई सेना ने अपने सैकड़ों नागरिकों को मौत के घाट उतार दिया था.

सरकार का रुख: इस डर से फिल्म पर रोक लगाने के बजाय कि इससे सेना की छवि खराब होगी और वह यालोग भड़क सकते हैं, दक्षिण कोरियाई सरकार ने इसे अपना पूरा समर्थन दिया. यहां तक कि तत्कालीन राष्ट्रपति मून जे-इन ने खुद इस फिल्म को एक सार्वजनिक सिनेमाघर में जाकर देखा.

The honourable court had directed the prosecution to provide clone copies of the unedited CCTV footage to the accused, which was not done for two years and a clone copy of the CCTV footage was finally handed over to the accused in 2016.”

It is no secret that in our country, the victim of a sexual assault case often undergoes extreme hardships. For decades, the friction between India and Pakistan was largely contained within South Asia. Occasionally, it spilled into international forums, and at times its echoes reached the Middle East—though usually confined to cricket fields. That is now changing. In recent months, the Middle East has emerged as a primary arena for this rivalry. At the center of this shift is an informal alignment of four Islamic nations, with Pakistan playing a leading role.

This development stands in contrast to the formal Quad that India had invested significant strategic capital in. The Quadrilateral Security Dialogue—consisting of the United States, Japan, Australia, and India—was born from shared relief efforts after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and eventually formalised to ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific. For New Delhi, it was a golden ticket to a high table where it could balance the rising influence of China. However, Donald Trump’s return to the White House and his administration’s isolationist “America First” stance, along with cooler India–US relations, have left it a largely dormant forum.

Even as the original Quad faded into the background, a new and more assertive formation began to take shape in West Asia. This informal Quad—bringing together Pakistan, Egypt, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia (PETSA)—has evolved from a collection of shared interests into a more coordinated alignment, sometimes described as a “West Asian Quad,” or “Islamic NATO.” Unlike the formal Quad, which has often moved cautiously, PETSA seems to be moving faster on key security and strategic issues. For New Delhi, the irony is hard to miss: this emerging alignment, which places Pakistan at its centre, appears to draw tacit support from the United States, the leader of the original Quad, and China, the very power the Quad was designed to counter.

To understand this shift better, it helps to recall the optimism of the early 2020s. At the time, India was central to a new diplomatic architecture. The Quad was at its peak, holding high-profile summits and moving with a sense of purpose aimed at balancing China’s growing influence. It was in this atmosphere that the I2U2 (India, Israel, the UAE, and the US) also took shape. Often described as a “West Asian Quad,” it complemented the original Quad’s broader strategic outlook. Together, these frameworks reflected India’s attempt to project influence across both the Indo-Pacific and West Asia. But as the political climate in Washington shifted, the momentum behind this approach began to decline.
